Une version arabe des évangiles: Langue, texte et lexique
Samir Arbache
A three-volume PhD thesis examining MS: Sinai, St. Catherine's Monastery, Ar. 72. The first volume contains an overview of the historical and cultural background to the first translations of the Bible into Arabic. Then he gives a detailed codicological study of MS: Sinai, St. Catherine's Monastery, Ar. 72 with information on its scribe, Stephen of Ramla. Arbache then describes his method for computational linguistic analysis of the text. First, he entered the text of MS: Sinai, St. Catherine's Monastery, Ar. 72 verse-by-verse in ASCII form into the computer program for the CETEDOC program at the Université catholique de Louvain. The results of his transcription of MS: Sinai, St. Catherine's Monastery, Ar. 72 is given in the second volume of his dissertation. He then used the software to analyze the text and perform an automated comparison with the Gospels in Greek. This produced a list of equivalences between Greek and Arabic terms which he later corrected manually. This list of equivalences was presented as a Greek-Arabic lexicon in the third volume of the thesis. Arbache used the information from the computational analysis to perform a linguistic study of MS: Sinai, St. Catherine's Monastery, Ar. 72 with an evaluation of the translation technique.
