Abstract
This article presents an extensive list of occurrences of the Arabic word رت as an equivalent of the Hebrew פר in Saadiah’s Tafsīr as well as in Karaite and Samaritan translations and exegetical works. The author seems to suggest that this peculiar usage, unattested in Muslim Arabic literature, may have been motivated by the difficulty in finding a suitable translation for the Hebrew word, but also speculates that it may once have been a living feature of Non-Muslim Arabic vernaculars. No explanation can be given as to the apparently interchangeable use of both رت and ثور in Saadiah’s translation.
